Purpose: We aimed to identify the effect of an aquatic exercise program in patients with knee arthritis through
a systemic literature review and meta-analysis.
Methods: Searched were conducted on EMBASE, CINAHL,PubMed, Ovid-MEDLINE, and Korean DB up to February 2020, using the keywords ¡°arthritis¡±, ¡°hydrotherapy¡±, ¡°pain¡±, ¡°function¡±, etc. The methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias for randomized studies and the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non-randomized studies. Data were analyzed using R.3.5.1.
Results: The results showed an overall medium effect size (ES) -0.53 (p<.001) of the aquatic exercise program on pain reduction in patients with knee arthritis. We identified a small effect size of the aquatic exercise program on muscle strength (ES=0.32, p=.003). however, the effect size of physical function was not significant.
Conclusion: Based on our results, the aquatic exercise program has moderate beneficial effects on pain in patients
with knee arthritis, and this should be considered in developing this program.
